The Bangalore Police is considered to be one of the most efficient Guardians of Law in the Country. They have been providing excellent service with well established community participation in crime prevention, maintenance of law and order and traffic management.

The City Police has a network of beats manned by foot patrol and vehicle patrol during day and night. These are backed by special mobile patrol units called Hoysala, traffic patrol and a number of armed striking force mobile units stationed in strategic areas. The latest news is that Policemen in Bangalore have become computer-savvy. Especially those working in police stations in and around the IT corridor. The computer boom began after the software companies started giving away used computers to the police stations as a goodwill gesture.

Naturally, policemen have become computer-savvy. In J.P. Nagar station, where there are five computers, policemen of all ranks have turned computer-literate. Even the policemen on the verge of retirement are now computer-'conscious'. Having more computers has made the job of complaint registration, chargesheet preparation and other routine work paperless and easier.

Citizens can now send petitions or grievances to the Karnataka police through email. And they can vary — from the complaint of a neighbour's dog barking to sound pollution or even a criminal act.

The police department is in the process of providing email IDs to all — from DGPs to the constable. "All emails will be standardised carrying the police personnel's designation; directory of their IDs will be prepared and posted on a website," saya a Polic Official. Even as the department comes a step closer in being citizen-friendly, efforts are on to dispense with the archaic wireless and teleprinters for "in-house communication." "A messaging system is being introduced for sending and receiving communication between police stations. Once this is done, a police officer, whether he likes it or not, has to communicate through the intranet," he points out.
IVRS: The police department will introduce inter-active voice response system (IVRS) in one district on a pilot basis. The district, yet to be finalised, will be around Bangalore. Complaints will be taken over the phone as done for water, power and telephone problems.

The jurisdiction of the City Police has been divided into 5 zones - North, East, West, South and Central. Each zone is headed by an Officer of the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police. Each zone is sub-divided into sub-divisions headed by Assistant Commissioners of Police which are further divided into Police Stations under the charge of an Officer of the rank of Police Inspector.

Assistant Commissioners of Police are the first line supervisory officers who supervise the working of the Police stations in their jurisdictions and report to their respective Deputy Commissioners of Police
