Bangalore is considered the Science Capital of India. (source : http://www.bangalorebio.com/biobangalore.htm) Biotechnology is a growing field in the city. With strong traditions in education, in science and in public sector undertakings related to science and technology, Bangalore has rapidly made the transition to the new economy in Information Technology. . Bangalore accounts for at least 97 of the approximately 240 biotechnology companies in India. Interest in Bangalore as a base for biotechology companies stems from Karnataka's comprehensive biotechnology policy, described by the Karnataka Vision Group on Biotechnology . Biotechnology is technology based on biology, especially when used in agriculture, food science, and medicine. The Government of Karnataka wishes to build on these strong foundations to make Bangalore the Biotech City of India. It has constituted a Biotechnology Vision Group to spearhead initiatives in Biotechnology. It has created the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology at the IT Park in Whitefield. It has placed Biotechnology under the Department of Information Technology. The several international-standard research institutes, the entrepreneurial spirit, pro-active policies by the Government, the cultural and economic milieu of a high-tech city: all ingredients for success are in place. Biotech is in its nascency but promises exponential growth. As of December
2002, about 85 biotech companies have been established in Karnataka and
this number exceeds any other state. Karnataka has attracted maximum VC
funding in biotechnology in the country. Ninety percent of the biotech
companies in Karnataka are in Bangalore, which has the best "biocluster"
in the country. Acharya
